9 ways to make the most of a small kitchen

If your kitchen is somewhat on the small side, you will no doubt be faced with a daily struggle of where exactly to put everything! Whether it is cupboards that spill out their contents every time you open the door or a lack of worktop space for food preparation, small kitchens can certainly be a challenge.

However, no matter how small your kitchen is there are a number of ways to maximise the available space and ensure that it functions as you need it to. A great way to make the most of your kitchen’s dimensions is to opt for a re-design. A dedicated Jewson design consultant is able to re-design the space, taking into account your wants and needs, to ensure the available space is used as efficiently and effectively as possible.

To further help you make the most of your kitchen, we have come up with nine tips and tricks that can help you maximise the space you have.

The Jewson Oslo kitchen

Go light, go bright

If you are looking to refit your small kitchen and extending the space isn’t an option, choose a kitchen with a light finish such as the Oslo from Jewson Kitchens. The high-gloss finish helps bounce light around the room, helping to maximise the space and the handleless design offers a fuss-free finish which is perfect for smaller spaces.

Do you have a clutter problem in your kitchen?

Get rid of the clutter

Ok, so maybe the knife block isn’t clutter exactly, but do the knives need to be housed in a special block on your worktop? Could they be placed in the cutlery drawer instead? Minimising clutter and storing things out of sight can go a long way in helping to make the most of the space you have.

A boiling water tap is time and energy efficient

Install a boiling water tap

In small kitchens multi-tasking gadgets are great news as they will help to save space. An instant hot water tap is the kind of gadget that you will use again and again for hot drinks and cooking. What’s more, you can save space by getting rid of the kettle!

Get creative with light

Get creative with light

Light can make a huge difference to any space and in particular small areas. Wherever possible, always maximise natural light so keep curtains/blinds to a minimum and if it is an option, installing a roof light can make a huge difference to the look and feel of a room. When it comes to artificial light there are a number of options to consider in the kitchen. Firstly, task lighting is a must – this is bright, focused light generally positioned over work surfaces to aid food prep. Ambient lighting can also be added to create an atmosphere that is perfect for dining and relaxing. Consider also adding plinth lighting and cabinet lighting to maximise the height and width of the room.

Space can sometimes be found outside the kitchen

Look outside the kitchen

If you are really struggling for cupboard space, think outside the box and look to rehome items traditionally held in the kitchen elsewhere within your home. A great example is the washing machine and tumble dryer – could they be housed somewhere else? For example, in the airing cupboard – creating a mini utility? Or perhaps an under stairs cupboard could be shelved to hold those occasionally used items such as baking equipment or kitchen gadgets.

Storage solutions

Fit in cupboard storage solutions

Helping to maximise every available inch, in cupboard storage is a great way to make the most of your cupboard space. Cupboard solutions range from carousels and other internal features that can be added when purchasing a new kitchen to retro-fitted options such as plate racks, baskets and cup hooks.

Energy efficient appliances

Choose energy efficient appliances

This is important for every size of kitchen, an energy efficient appliance (look for A+ ratings) is not only great news for the environment but for energy bills too. The Jewson Kitchens’ appliances range includes appliances from leading brands such as Neff, Hotpoint, Rangemaster, AEG and Caple.

Integrated appliances

Opt for integrated appliances

Integrated appliances are a great way to help a small kitchen feel bigger, with everything hidden by cupboard fronts, the illusion is of an uninterrupted run of units, maximising the feel of the room.

Add the wow-factor

Just because your kitchen is small on space doesn’t mean it needs to be small on style. When decorating a small kitchen aim to add one statement piece that offers the wow-factor, it could be a statement tap, a backsplash of bold walls tiles or an eye-catching light fitting that completes the room.
